- In 1943, Hankley Common was used as a D-Day training site. Canadian Troops built a section of the Atlantic Wall here to practice breaching it for the D-Day landings. Remnants can still be seen today.
- Hankley Common has been used as a film location for many films including three James Bond movies and episodes of Doctor Who.
- The common also became famous for more sinister reasons in 1942, where it became known as the site of the Wigwam Murder.
